Tickets are on sale now for MOTIVE Crime & Mystery Festival featuring more than 40 authors appearing over three days, including international bestsellers, notable debuts, workshops, readings and more.

Something wicked this way comes to Toronto’s literary scene. The Toronto International Festival of Authors (TIFA) today announced that MOTIVE Crime & Mystery Festival will return for its fourth spine-tingling year from June 27 to 29 at University of Toronto (U of T). In a new partnership with Victoria University at U of T, the festival will transform these gothic halls into an epicentre of literary suspense.

MOTIVE will bring together an unprecedented mix of voices this year including: Iceland’s former First Lady  Eliza Reid who recently made her fiction debut, international bestseller Shari Lapena returning as a festival favourite, romance star Uzma Jalaluddin crossing into the wildly popular cozy crime category, and thriller master Linwood Barclay continuing to define the genre. This year’s festival will unfold in a new location at University of Toronto – within the fitting gothic revival halls of  Victoria University. This new atmospheric backdrop will allow attendees to immerse themselves in the festival’s celebration of crime and mystery storytelling.

“We’re thrilled to be presenting MOTIVE Crime & Mystery Festival in partnership with Victoria University this year,” says Roland Gulliver, Director of TIFA, “With our new venue, the festival brings together crime and mystery fans for a weekend where analyzing clues, discussing murder weapons, and debating red herrings over coffee is perfectly normal, and everyone appreciates a good plot twist. We’re incredibly proud that our roster of authors is filled with bestsellers from Canada and across the globe, while also featuring veteran talent and new voices.”

This year’s program offers a compelling mix of true crime, interactive events, and literary exploration, appealing to both dedicated readers and aspiring writers. Highlights include the return of forensic science workshops, an immersive Gin & Sin mystery performance, and in-depth panels on Canadian and international crime writing – spanning cozy mysteries to psychological thrillers. The lineup also features masterclasses, Toronto Crime Tours, and timely true crime discussions led by journalists, former FBI agents, and subject-matter experts.

Passes for MOTIVE Crime & Mystery Festival start at $20 CAD and are on sale now. Canadian booklovers can purchase them at festivalofauthors.ca/motive-2025/. To request complimentary press tickets, please email akasha@thetarogroup.com for more information.

Today TIFA announced a strategic evolution that will see the festival become a fully independent organisation. Effective April 1, TIFA will leave its Harbourfront Centre festival location to host authors at new venues across Toronto, including a new partnership with Victoria University in the University of Toronto.

The 2025 Season will include a new 5-day format for its 45-year flagship Festival, October 29-November 2, 2025 as well as a new mini-Festival celebrating romance fiction November 21-23, 2025, plus the 4th annual edition of its popular MOTIVE Crime & Mystery Festival, June 27-29, 2025.

Since its inception in 1974 as International Readings at Harbourfront, TIFA has established Toronto as a global leader in uniting authors and audiences.

The changes announced today represent the next chapter in TIFA’s storied history of championing literary excellence in a city that has produced so many world-renowned writers.

“The new TIFA is a 50-year-old start-up. Founded at the Harbourfront Centre, it has all the experience of a legacy arts organisation, with the energy, optimism and freshness of a newcomer. And to start now, when the world and Canada are in extreme turmoil, well, that just signals there is no better time to show the power of stories, ideas and conversation to make a better world. Toronto is a city of passionate and engaged readers. It is TIFA’s job to create new ways to find them.” – TIFA Director Roland Gulliver

A Vision for the Future

“We’re listening to the needs of our stakeholders. We understand the changes in reading trends and audience behaviour. So now we are poised to redefine Canada’s literary landscape by opening access to new and growing audiences, prominent cultural venues, and a roster of world-class authors and rising stars.”

“This transition will enable us to offer high quality events, greater access for audiences, and new education and outreach opportunities – both live and online.

Our vision and commitment will deepen our relations with publishers, partners, creative institutions, authors and artists to cultivate an ecosystem of constant storytelling innovation.”

Said Dr. Rhonda N. McEwen, president and vice-chancellor. “We have a long history of championing and developing creativity at Victoria University. Our faculty and students, including Norman Jewison, Margaret Atwood, Northrop Frye, Arthur Schalow and Zalika Reid-Benta, exemplify our belief that creativity thrives at the intersection of ideas, disciplines and unique voices.”

“We founded our new Centre for Creativity to foster collaboration across sectors, and we see TIFA as an ideal new partner in this vision. By bringing together world-class authors, innovative thinkers, and passionate readers, this partnership will not only enrich Toronto’s literary landscape but also create new opportunities for experiential learning, engagement, and storytelling innovation for our students and community.”

A Transformative Year for TIFA

2025 will see an ambitious expansion of TIFA’s programming, reinforcing its commitment to literary excellence across genres and forms. The 2025 season will feature:

The Toronto International Festival of Authors (TIFA) is delighted to announce this year’s festival of engaging talks, readings, masterclasses, performances and exhibits. Tickets go on sale to the public on August 15 at FestivalofAuthors.ca.

The 2024 Festival explores the concept of “writing home” – from books and stories about the places we all call home, to the ideas, cultures and conflicts that inform what home means to us. TIFA presents a dynamic lineup of conversations and readings with the best fiction and non-fiction writers, movie screenings, food tastings, kids’ activities, poetry slams, and writing masterclasses. Over 100 artists and authors from 11 countries will be featured.

TIFA presents three special events at Koerner Hall in the TELUS Centre for Performance and Learning with international superstars, Yuval Noah Harari, Liane Moriarty and The Moth. Popular programme streams return including POP Fiction celebrating romance, horror and all things genre; delicious food conversations are to be discovered with Bite the Book; Critical Conversations discuss our contemporary world; and TIFA Kids offers fun-filled weekends of activities and stories. The Festival is honoured to present a new programme stream celebrating Indigenous stories from across Canada including Murray Sinclair, Angela Sterritt and Amanda Peters. The city we all call home is celebrated with a night of readings, music and food as TIFA launches Write the Neighbourhood, a collection of specially commissioned stories published by Book*hug.

“For each one of us, ‘home’ means something a little different; somewhere we belong, somewhere we long for. In a city as multicultural as Toronto we wanted to delve into how our writers and artists explore this idea through stories, food, music, identity, language and illustration,” said Roland Gulliver, Toronto International Festival of Authors Director. “Each year, we imagine ways to bring guests from around the world to encounter fellow Canadian writers and audiences, to immerse themselves in storytelling of all forms, exciting book lovers and inspiring new readers through the power of stories.”

TIFA welcomes bestselling authors to share their captivating stories and unpack critical conversations sparked by current events. With some of the most inspiring writers in fiction, graphic novels, short stories, poetry, political science, and history.
